I am about to switch from wireless internet to fibre. Of course the fibre box is at the opposite end of the room from my K50. Am I better off with the router close to the box or close to the server. Or does it not make any difference? Does the cable quality matter upstream vs downstream. I would like to utilise my current Chord Shawline Ethernet cable either up or downstream dependent on router placement. It would have to be on the short side. I am not interested in wireless maybe because I am a bit of a dinosaur and have had lots of bad experiences. Any advice gladly received.
Hi , I do have 10 meter normal cheap Cat6a Lan cable from the box to the room. This goes to an “audio” Switch direct alongside the K50, from there a meter “audio” Lan Cable to the K50.
The last switch (and the kabel) isn’t unnessecary and makes a difference.
Succes
I used a standard Ethernet switch at my router that includes a fiber port. Ran the fiber port to my audio rack. There I have a fiber to Ethernet converter made by Small Green Computer. Short HIFI Ethernet cable to my music server. Small Green has all the fiber audio devices needed for a complete system. Their support is fantastic.

I assume you have an optical network terminstion (ONT) device orcsomething with a similar names This receives the broadband service and converts to ethernet. I assume it doesn’t have SFP port.
That would be like what I have.
Tge next device you’d need is a router, typically provided by the broadband service … and probably mediocre. It probably demoesnt have SFP either.
I suggest using a Mikrotik CRS 305 to convert ethernet to fibre … great bang fir buck. Rin 10m orcwhatever you need of fibre to either another CRS 305 or if you can afford it a Sonore Optical Module or EtherRegen, or an audiophile switch with SFP.
Keep wited cable short - 50cm or less if you can. Use Cat 6e unshielded (UTP) until you can afford more audiophile ethernet cables. Every cable matters, every switch matters, even SFP MODULES matter. As you have K50 you could probably get a much better cable than the Chord, but use the Chord between ONT and router or router and CRS
Why CRS 305? Because it is 10G spec and has lower jitter etc than 1G.
