Which I2S module for an Oladra?

Hello everyone,
I’m new to the forum.
I use MSB DAC
I started with a Premier DAC and currently have a Select 2 + DD.
I’m using an old Antipodes CX + EX combo as a server/streamer. I’m currently outputting via USB using ProUSB/ProISL MSB modules to the Digital Director.

I’ve ordered an Oladra G4 to replace the CX+EX.

I see on the Antipodes forum that some USB owners prefer the I2S output on the Oladra over the USB output.

MSB currently offers two I2S modules, one using an RJ45 connector, the other an HDMI connector.

So my question is, which is the best MSB I2S module for the Oladra?

Hi Patrice, if you decide to go I2S, use the HDMI module on the MSB.

I have a MSB Cascade/Oladra combo. I prefer the I2S HDMI connection, over the ProUSB option.

Hello Mark,

I’m French (PR).
We had the pleasure of exchanging messages recently when you took control of my EX.
I just ordered an Oladra G4 and I fully intend to upgrade it to a G5 when possible.

Here’s a quick update based on my experience: I received my universal MSB I2S/HDMI module and was able to compare the Oladra’s I2S output against its USB output (via the ProUSB/ProISL module) on my Select DAC + Digital Director setup.
1- With I2S, the sound is fluid—comparable to vinyl—but it lacks attack and bass impact.
2- With USB, the DAC’s clock takes the lead, resulting in a slightly more detailed sound and, above all, deeper bass extension.
It all comes down to personal preference, but since I use a system comprising THRAX Audio Lyra SE speakers and Basus subwoofers (featuring dual 38cm powered, servo-controlled drivers), I tend to favor the USB connection.

Thanks for the update. Your post says ‘the DAC’s clock takes over’ with a the USB module, implying that isn’t true with the I2S module. That isn’t correct as Daniel Francis of MSB has clearly stated with the I2S module, the DAC’s clock is in control.

That doesn’t dismiss your observations but I think it’s an important clarification to others considering these modules.

Currently no I2S sources sync to the DAC, the word sync output is to enable it on any products that will be able to take advantage of it. All incoming audio is reclocked in our internal buffers with our on board clocks. We wanted this module to be as future ready as possible and hope to see this feature get used.

Thanks for this important information. I’m going to look a bit more closely at the setup of my I2S connection. Perhaps the lack of punch in the bass comes from the HDMI cable being used. Do you have any suggestions?

I have not gone down that rabbit hole yet. I am using a borrowed Tubulus Concentus HDMI cable. All I know is it’s all silver like the rest of my non-power cables.

I may try different HDMI cables once I take delivery of my MSB Palisade. I will likely try a Wireworld, Shunyata, and maybe Audioquest HDMI as my dealer would probably support demos of them.
