Different OS on EX

Hi guys,

Maybe a bit strange question, but here it comes.
I have an old EX which I understand is now out of date and obsolete, with no updates at all.
I want to know if anyone tried to install a different OS on the system drive to utilise this nice piece of HW.
Maybe just take out the system drive and replace with a different one and clean install something like Roon ROCK?

Anyone tried something like this?

I debated with myself as to approve this post; obviously, this is a forum dedicated to all things Antipodes Audio, and while we would recommend that you use our software, nothing is stopping you from loading whatever software you wish on the device.

Clearly, any warranty is voided, and any future advances in our software platform would be unavailable, additionally, any costs involved with returning the unit to Antipodes software would be at the owner’s cost.

Thank you for the reply, and of course I fully understand.
The reason I asking is simply as this HW is left
out of updated what so ever, so no security patches, no up to date features, etc.
It would be a shame to just trash a nice piece of HW so this makes me think to repurpose it and give it a new life

Is the unit on v5.0.1 software? This is the latest available software. We are advising on some units to stick with the v4 platform, as over-the-air updates are problematic and are being addressed.
We haven’t left any hardware behind at this stage, except for early 32bit systems.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the reply. My system is showing v4 as you can see on the screenshot provided.

V4.4 is stable software, advise holding there at this time.
You may not be aware that updates are on hold currently as Antipodes Audio develops a new software stack.

Does this mean the EX will have update too?

Yes it does! My EX and CX are on v5.01 but as Mark stated at this moment it would be wise to hold on to v4 until the proces of updating is redesigned. This could take a little while (see thread about AMS5). However v4 was perfect by then for me so don’t rush. Happy listening

A major update is coming that will make it to your EX also. No date has been promised so we are all waiting with baited breath.

Looks like there is a lot of frustration around with everything being on hold for a very long time. This isn’t good for customers in any kind of business.

I just wondering how would for example ROCK OS compare sonically to Antipodes OS on the same HW, in this case EX.
I am sure someone have tried it already. Its just about swapping mSATA drive and installing a different OS of the choice.
None of the EX are under warranty anymore anyway.
I have to order some new drive and I will surely give it a try

It very could be that someone has tried it. Not sure that such a someone could be found on this forum.

Why the ROCK OS? Roon has never shown interest in prioritizing sound quality. Not sure how things currently stand with AudioLinux but at least that prioritizes sound quality.

Why ROCK? Because is so simple to set and because I use Roon environment for music playback.
And Roon ROCK is based on custom kernel made
from scratch aim for music, and Roon delivers bit perfect playback unless DSP is used.
I’m only use direct out to my DAC with no digital volume control or any kind of alterations.
And its FREE to use not like such you mentioned

Since Roon itself continues to receive updates I am not sure you will see any benefit from swapping in ROCK. Just because ROCK is designed for music doesn’t mean that it’s been its been optimized for sound quality. The AMS OS that’s already on the EX has been optimized for sound quality.
