I have been using a S60/S30 combo and thinking of cable upgrades. I have started another thread about power cables - thanks to everyone’s valued input.
Trying to understand if better Ethernet cables would also be worthwhile. Anyone has experience or recommendations for Ethernet cables to the S30 or further upstream?
When playing wav files from the internal SSD, does the Ethernet cable affect the sound?
When playing from Quboz/Tidal, some or all of the track is first loaded into RAM then fed to the player. Again, how does the Ethernet cable affect the sound?
Playing local files from SSD are not affected by a ethernet cable.
Playing from Qobuz shouldn’t be affected - but it does… Plus an iFi LAN-Silencer at the ethernet-port of my K30. These silencers are really good value for money. One before the switch helps too…
Playing local files IS / ARE affected by Ethernet cables AND all apparatus before it. Try it by remove your ethernet cable while playing local files from SSD.
Hi, there is more “Unrest” in the Presence, it gives an edgy character to the sound. On the Internet you can find more Information about the Subject. I beat this “Unrest” with an Ethernet Cable from Ansuz (D2), a passive EON2 Filter from Network Acoustics and an EtherREGEN from Uptone Audio (1Gb) all non glassfibre.
Try it for yourself, if you can’t detect it then you have proberly a clean Network…
In my K50 > Tambaqui system, everything matters. Any changes in the network, all the way back to the ISP’s modem affects the SQ. Components like power supply, power cords, DC cables and certainly ethernet cables matter. My network configuration:
ISP modem ( IFI PS) > Synergistic Research ethernet cable > Netgear R7000 Router ( IFI Elite PS) ( AS PC) > SR Ethernet X cable > Sonore oMD (Finisar 1475 SFP) ( Teddy Pado P ( AS PC) >15M Fiber > EtherREGEN (Farad Super 3 PS) (SR Excite SX PC) >
Shunyata Sigma V2 ethernet cable > K50. I switch between 3 digital outputs to the Tambaqui which also can dramatically alter the presentation.
You can follow much of the 2 year evolution of my and Audiobomber’s network at WBF. I can hear no difference now between SSD files and Qobuz. I run Roon/Squeeze on the K50 most of the time. Of course this is all system/room dependant and personal taste.
The original stream keeps digital bit-perfect. But every cable acts as an antenna. If you use high quality (not even high cost in any kind) you can influence the amount of noise coming with the stream. Good cables filter them out by shield. There are a lot of passive and active LAN-filters on the market - from low cost up to high cost. The only way to find out what fits to your set up is try and send it back if you don’t hear any improvement.
Yes, put simply, if its connected it certainly can be a path for noise, and that can be reduced by cable design.
In my experience, even changes to the network that are unrelated to the path to an audio system can also have an impact. Even stuff that is not connected by wire. I have made changes that are divorced from wired connection to my CX by 2 x fibre, and can still hear the imoact.
