Power supply Melco Switch Speed / Oladra without switch?

Hi,
I am currently thinking about a different power supply for my Melco Switch. I run everything on my main system, which also has an Oladra connected to it, from a high quality Gigawatt PC4 EVO+ power supply.
I’m currently testing Sbooster, but it doesn’t seem to be fast enough for me. I would find the hybrid technology from Antipodes interesting, but the product seems to have been discontinued. Ferrum Hypsos would be another option. If you have any other ideas, please let me know.

I also have to admit that I’m a bit surprised that even my Oladra responds to the power supply on the Switch. In turn, the power supply on the Switch is also in a large power supply. With the original switch mode power supply it even sounds amazingly good. Unfortunately, this power supply scratches at my hi-fi pride.
I would also be interested to know if anyone operates their Oladra directly via Lan on the router? And why does he/she prefer this?
I have also replaced the switching power supply on the router with one from Plixir😅

I have tried operating my Oladra connected directly to the router via LAN but to my ears this was not as good sounding as using a good switch between the Oladra and the router. I have also tried several fiber connection solutions between the Oladra and the router and my opinion is that they all degraded the sound quality, even the expensive boutique solutions.

So I use a PhoenixNET switch between my Oladra and the LAN and to my ears this gives a smoother presentation without the hardness I hear with a direct connection to the router or with a fiber connection. I selected the PhoenixNET after comparing alternatives such as the Melco.

This isn’t really directly, as routers contain switches in order to provide more ports. The switch feeding a server will influence the sound. Often with routers, their built in switches don’t influence the sound in a good way. Benefits tend to be heard when a better switch is placed between them.

Alexander, I had good results with a Plixir DC power supply (cannot remember the model sorry - output was 4A) powering my Melco switch.

Thanks for the feedback. If I think about it, I could also go two-track at this point and only use the Innuos for the Oladra, then I wouldn’t have to worry about the power supply to the Melco. I agree, the Melco sounds quite neutral or linear, with the external power supplies I can move it in a few directions…As I recently decided to go for a big power supply, it sounded good spontaneously with the ‘cheap’ switching power supply too, I used to banish it immediately and put it in the drawer.

Thanks for the tip, I know Plixir well, together with the Melco you do indeed have a suitable connection. With my large power supply, my beloved Plixir 4A no longer fits, so I’m offering it for sale.

Thank you, that makes sense to me and also corresponds to my experience. The Oladra is a great device. Now it’s just a matter of fine-tuning the entire chain.

Hi, don’t you have any problems with the 100 MB limit on Innuos? I’ve just had a look at the device, it seems to be cleverly designed. Alternatively, the Bonn NX could be something else.

Best regards

Alexander

Hello Nick.

Did you compare it the Network Acoustics Tempus switch before purchasing the PhoenixNet?

Hi, no I did not compare because I had the PhoenixNET well before the Tempus was available.

No issues at all with that. In any case our broadband is via a cell mast 4G router. And also never had any problems with streaming music or hi res films via that connection.

I think the obsession with high speed broadband has got a bit out of hand.

Understood, thanks.

It seems that the tempus is highly regarded, as is the PhoenixNet, but I’m tempted to home trial the tempus because, if I don’t like it, there’s a 60 day money back guarantee.

My local Innuos dealer loaned me a PhoenixNET for a few weeks before I decided to buy it.

I don’t think that my local Innuos dealer would be so accommodating…

I’ve heard both in my system. The Tempus is a special product so I think it will be highly unlikely that you will want your money back.

Do you have any summary of how each sounded compared? And were you streaming the music from Qobus or similar or playing locally stored files. I was/am playing the latter but still I found the switches made a difference.

Is the tempus still in your system?

If not, which switch is in your system?

I listen to Radio Paradise to warm up my system, and then listen to files stored on my K41.

I only ever stream from Qobuz when I want to listen to a new album release, so that I can decide whether or not to buy the download.

Hello: I bought a Network Acoustics Muon Pro System.
I listen to music directly from Qobuz. Since I bought it, I haven’t recorded anything on my K50’s SSD again.

You may recall me sharing this as I posted a link to it here previously. Jump to the paragraph on this page that begins with “As a validation experiment…” as this took place in my home. The author links to my observations and those of a friend who also attended.

We tried both if I recall correctly. Switches made a difference regardless.
