I see this drive is recommended for the Kala line but I can’t find it in stock anywhere. Do you have other recommendations for ssd drives that are currently available on the market?
Hi there, we would recommend any server-grade SSD at minimum over a consumer SSD.
As an alternative look at the Synology SAT5221
Hey Mark - they are also not in stock anywhere and they are even more expensive than the pm893. I think there is a general issue sourcing enterprise SATA drives due to the AI boom. If you know of any sources where I can order a drive like the pm893 and have it shipped to Toronto, Canada please let me know. Honestly not being able to find one is making me rethink buying a Kala 41 like I was intending to.
Sadly, we cannot control the availability or pricing of SSDs globally.
The main reason for recommending Enterprise Grade, and this applies to whatever music server you purchase that requires storage, is that they are quieter. Additionally, some models offer a form of error protection during a power outage.
Advantech industrial grade is another option.
Previously, we recommended the Samsung QVO/EVO range, from the consumer range (I still use these in my OLADRA, had them before we switched to PM893)
Are the Enterprise grade better? YES. Do consumer grade work? YES
We sometimes use PB Tech here in New Zealand, they have a global site and ship internationally https://www.pbtech.com/ however, stocks are limited and do seem pricey currently.
How much storage capacity do you think you will require?
I am not saying these are the best deals out there, but here is a link for the Samsung EVO from Amazon and Best Buy; looks like the same price. And to think I bought a 2TB 870 QVO 2 years ago for $130! I should have bought more!
or best buy:
They may not be quite as robust as an enterprise SSD meant for data centres, or as low noise, but like Mark I haven’t had an issue with mine, and for the price of a “recommended” one you can buy 4 or 5 of these.
Thanks Mark. I’m looking for something close to 8Tb
