USB silent output with Squeeze

I’m moving this from another thread.

When USB output is selected in Antipodes, Squeeze and Squeeze + Roon show tracks as playing but output is silent and DAC shows nothing is being received. Roon (both server & player), and JPlay work fine. Squeeze and Squeeze + Roon work fine via AES. Any suggestions for what is going on?

So it’s only Roon+Squeeze where USB doesn’t work?
Probably best to make an appointment for support here…

Otherwise post some screenshots of both AMS Dashboard and Roon Audio Settings.

Squeeze+Squeeze doesn’t work either.

Please book a remote support session so we can assist…

Just discovered the previous extended thread on this problem. Consensus seems to be that you faff about with turning the chain on and off etc. until miraculously Squeeze decides to work, whereupon you leave everything switched on. I’ve booked a support session so Antipodes can check everything is set up correctly but such a remote access won’t, I imagine, be able to tell whether sound is restored. If we do get it going I’m not sure I’m willing to leave everything switched on, especially when I go away. This does seem to be a problem exclusive to Antipodes/Squeeze since that’s all that comes up on an internet search.

However I can use Squeeze+Roon with AES, and while that restricts DSD usage, I don’t have that many DSD files, so probably I’ll rest content with that solution.

Antipodes Audio recommends that you leave the your music server on at all times to enable quick access to music, and that your device is up to temp.
If you don’t want to do that, no problem.

Generally speaking you do not need to faff around, you simply toggle the “Enable Squeezebox Support” button in Roon setup.
If Squeeze server is enabled, while using the Roon/Squeeze preset, then that will be a test in patience, this is highlighted inside Roon, as it needs to be disabled in the AMS Dashboard.

What is happening with your particular device, has yet to be determined, so let’s not leap to any conclusions.
Sounds like something else may be at play here, what is your DAC.
The team will be on deck tomorrow to assist.

Yes, generally I do leave the server on. I’ve toggled the Enable Squeezebox Support, and I guess that’s why Squeeze appears for Output in Roon and music shows as playing. But no sound. The DAC is Bricasti M21. I have cycled DAC inputs, tuned off DAC and restarted, gone back to switch to restart the whole chain, etc…And as I mentioned, there is no problem using USB (‘USB Bricasti’ is what the AES dashboard offers) with other apps. I have even tried a different USB cable.

Seems like there’s 2-3 posts with the same thing mentioned recently so I’ll just post here, feel free to move if needed.

I use a K50 with Bricasti M21 and have no issues using any player /server with USB. Info isn’t always clear so I’ve taken a few screen shots and will explain as best as I can.

Squeeze - Squeeze.

Set AMS to Squeeze and DSD to DoP which is what Bricasti ask for.

Ensure C-3PO is off as mentioned in another thread.

If you’re getting no sound through Squeeze - Squeeze, most likely an incorrect user end point setting, eg, something in Squeeze app isn’t configured correctly. Antipodes video on setup, maybe watch again. Help session with the guys should be able to sort it though.

Roon - Squeeze server.

If servers aren’t configured correctly in AMS then you’ll get this within Roon when trying to enable Squeeze support.

Go into AMS and disable all apart from Roon server. When you click initially it won’t show it’s doing anything but if you look at your browser tab you’ll see the spinning wheel. Just give it 20 seconds or so to make the changes. Make sure server device is showing as whatever Antipodes server model you are using. I noticed it can default to none until you’ve set this up.

Then in Roon, you’ll no longer have the LMS message and have this instead which allows you to enable Squeeze support within Roon.

Under device setup you’ll have the following options…

You’ll get this if selecting the first option, convert to PCM (done within Roon) and M21 output will show as PCM.

If you change to DSD over PCM (DoP) which is what Bricasti tell you to use you need to change the previous menu option as below…

This will then give you DSD to M21…

Be aware though that DSD64 (DSD showing on M21 USB input) is your max. When you go to DSD128 (DSD2 on M21 USB input) it’ll down sample to DSD64…

Using Roon alone (Roon server / player) with output in AMS5 set to DoP / USB - Bricasti, you’ll get full DSD output from Roon up to M21’s max of DSD256 (DSD4 on M21 Input display). 128 given below as an example.

Many thanks for this. Yes, I believe there is a problem in the Squeeze app, because Squeeze and Squeeze+Roon happily show as playing through USB but there is no sound. I’m going to stop obsessing about this because Squeeze+Roon through AES, with Roon set to downsample DSD above DSD64 sounds absolutely great.

Worth getting sorted though I think. Just needs a quick session with the techy guys.

I preferred AES (Jorma) quite a bit more than USB but started to get annoyed at not being able to play a few higher dsd albums. Decided to see if usb cables sounded any different to each other, especially after upgrading K50 from G3 to G4. One I had delivered today sounds excellent and it’s the nail in the coffin for AES for me now. Quite happy to have solved this pet peeve and didn’t cost me a fortune either! (Neotech 1020).

Thanks. We had a bit of a problem with the remote access but I hope I’ve got that sorted. The really weird thing is that if I have Bricasti USB selected, Squeeze and Squeeze+Roon will play (audibly) through the AES connection, while USB works fine for Roon and JPlay. Go figure. (At least I hope the techies can!

btw One difference from the setup video with Squeeze is that there’s no option for My Squeezebox in my Squeeze menu, but nonetheless was able to set up Qobuz without difficulty.

Update on this. Tech spent three and a half hours tracking down the coding glitch that meant Squeeze was unable to switch from AES to USB. I have a temporary fix and am playing Squeeze+Roon happily through USB now. A full fix will be in the next update pushed out in April. It’s always reassuring for a non-techie to discover that something going amiss isn’t down to one’s stupidity! Thank you Antipodes for the time and trouble taken to solve this relatively trivial problem.

BTW for anyone with Mac booking a tech session - AnyDesk does not work with Sequoia, as widely reported. Used an old laptop with Sonoma and all was well.

“old” laptop on Sonoma. I find that quite funny as I type on my 2015 Airbook on Monterey, with Roon being controlled by my daughter’s “hand-me-up” iphone 7.
