Why is usb preferred or recommended over AES

Not much more to add, just wondering what’s inferior about AES

Who claims this to be the case? Many prefer AES/EBU (myself included) and much depends on the quality of the cable of course. Others insist I2S sounds best. I have a high end expensive USB and compared to my equally high end AES/EBU I prefer the sound of AES

Doesn’t it depend on the connected devices and your ears? My K30 G4 and Holo May are connected with a Shunyata Sigma USB because both have a reputation for having this well implemented. Maybe wrongly but I’ve not bothered to try anything else. I’m happy that others before me have and come to this conclusion, saved me time and money and it sounds just fine to me. Appreciate it may not be so simple for others but it was one of the deciding factors on purchasing the Holo May.

Depends on your DAC, ears, room, source material etc.

So they are equal? And it’s just down to what i prefer the sound of? As opposed to some technical shortfall with aes or superior attribute of usb

USB

USB Audio 2.0 Full Compliance
– PCM to 32 bit/768kHz
– DoP to DSD256
– Native DSD to DSD512

AES3

– PCM to 24bit/192kHz
– DoP to DSD64

Prior to G4 AES was, in Antipodes opinion the preferred connection.
With G4 and the introduction of isolation, regeneration, and reclocking of USB it is a much harder task for us to differentiate.

Use whatever sounds best to you, that suits your system, ears, source material, the only shortfall of AES is if you want to listen to higher than 192 or DSD64.

thanks Mark, very helpful indeed. I didn’t know that AES doesnt support native DSD at all.
