Antipodes Audio AMSv5 Release Information

They employed enough people to get the job done within the time constraints they committed to and within the constraints of their budget. I’m sure Antipodes would love to have a budget as large that the one Lendlease had to work with.

Its all relative, that building cost £250m to build.

I can understand the frustration, since I’m waiting for updates to make my K22/K41 as functional as it should be. Audiophiles always feel there’s something a bit better and I can drive myself crazy thinking about what I don’t have, and would JPlay sound better than Squeeze/Roon - as things are if I try that it’s a recipe for hours of frustration and a support session. But I don’t feel that frustration or the itch to move between music players when listening to music - which sounds just brilliant if I stop myself messing about. That said, I would really like the Audirvana capacity trailed for April!

It seems to have become; “ahh well, it’ll be done when it’s done…” which is not really a great place for end-users.

I liked the sonicorbiter software implementation which was updated frequently. I wonder if it is still the backbone of AMS as hqplayer still says sonicorbitor.

I recall Mark previously mentioning that portions of it were still being leveraged.

I owned a microRendu many years ago. That ran Sonicorbiter and running an update check often brought down updates to individual packages. I believe the update procedure just pulled the latest versions from the third-party repositories. This is risky as any bugs introduced into those repositories could cripple things and Sonore could do little to resolve things as it wasn’t their repository. That’s why Antipodes only pushed out versions that they themselves tested first.

There was a least one instance where a new SD card had to be mailed out to obtain the latest version of Sonicorbiter. I didn’t understand that back then, but I now suspect that this is what they had to do when the Linux version itself had to be updated. This is a heavier lift to perform in an automated fashion.

I believe the last version of Sonicorbiter that ran on Antipodes was 2.7. Version 2.8 that followed wasn’t available for Antipodes. Copilot tells me that the latest version is 2.9 and that was released two years ago in July 2023. Their need to increment this is less because of how they allow third party apps to be continuously updated. I wonder though how they handle updates to HQPlayer that require a newer version of Linux.

To all users eagerly awaiting the software update: Why worry?
I own a K41 that is still running on AMS 4.4!
There were some problems in the beginning (roon as player) so for around one year I listened to roon/squeeze with great joy. (many on this forum believe that this is the best combination)
Now my streamer/DAC La Rosita GammaHD came back from holidays/update in the south of France :fr: and now I listen to roon/roon and it sounds gorgeous !
Still have to try roon/squeeze and roon/hq player but in the moment I am just enjoying my rig.
There might always be a place for improvements (software/hardware) but don’t forget to enjoy the music and relax.

Another side to the story is that I bought a K50 over two years ago, and one of the reasons I purchased the K50 was the software and supporting infrastructure was to be released in the near future, giving audible improvements, and hasn’t happened.

Interesting comment posted here. Quote:

“I need to send my Sonictransporter i5V3 to Small Green Computer to get the OS updated from 2.8 to 2.9. Unlike prior updates which previously were free and just required a click in the web GUI, this upgrade requires the unit be sent to SGC and a $100 fee paid to get to 2.9, which includes the embedded version 5 of HQ Player.”

The upgrade procedure that Antipodes used to get us to v5 seems to have been more capable than what Small Green Computer appears to have at their disposal. I’m sure it will be even more so when the next version finally makes its way to us.

Glad now that I am aboard the AMS train. Thanks for the info.

Much earlier in this thread I reported an issue with artist images not displaying correctly in Squeeze since upgrading to v5. I never was able to find a solution so I worked around the problem by searching for an artist instead of browsing through the list. It wasn’t just that the wrong art was displayed. Squeeze had trouble retrieving the list of albums for the artist as well.

The problem is finally gone and I now suspect it was caused by the EtherRegen’s 100mbps bandwidth. With the tempus switch now able to support gigabit, the Squeeze gui is much more responsive. I guess that shouldn’t be surprising but it was to me as I would have expected 100mbps to be fast enough for the Squeeze UI.
